Kathryn Porter lives in an infill development in Oakland and through her design and development firm, Premises Company, has overseen the construction of projects in Oakland and Emeryville. Most of Premises’ work has focused on West Oakland; four projects are located with in a four square-block area south east of the I-80/I-580 interchange. These West Oakland projects include: The Ranch, a seven building development with 16 residential units and a 1.25 acre garden, and Hannah Studios, seven market-rate, live/work units built on a long-vacant lot. The latest project is the conversion of the former Clawson School, vacant for twenty years prior to ownership by Clawson Project Associates. The renovation of the original 1917 school building included 28 live/work units.
