Barry Swenson Builder created San Jose’s first live/work project. In the mid-1980s, a decade before the city established its live/work policies, Barry Swenson Builder undertook the conversion of an old warehouse into artist studios. Although there were concerns expressed by the neighbors about noise and traffic from client visits, city planning staff recommended the project as a way to bring artists and small businesses close to the downtown. Today, almost all of the units house a wide range or artists and professionals, and only a small number are used for purely residential purposes.
